Concreting Mildura properties need is shaped by two things: the ground and the climate. This guide covers the finishes on offer, the specifications behind a slab that lasts, how concrete is protected from sun and salt, and the towns covered on both sides of the Murray. Each section links to a page with the detail.

Plain broomed concrete is the everyday finish for driveways and paths. Exposed aggregate concrete washes the surface back to reveal natural stones for grip and a finish that hides dust. Coloured concrete mixes oxide pigment through the slab, and stamped concrete presses slate, cobblestone or timber patterns into it. Ground finishes cut into a cured slab: honed concrete stops at a smooth matte surface for alfresco areas and pools, while polished concrete carries on to a sheen for living areas and shops. Lighter blends stay cooler underfoot on a 40C afternoon.

Concrete driveways are built on compacted crushed rock with mesh on chairs and saw-cut joints, thick enough for the vehicles that use them. Concrete slabs and footings carry homes, extensions and sheds, designed from a soil test under AS 2870. Concrete paths fall away from the walls and sit below the damp course. Concrete kerbs and edging are extruded in one continuous run, and concrete retaining walls in sleepers, blocks or panels hold level changes with drainage behind them.

Most residential concrete in Mildura is a 20 to 32MPa mix, with a higher grade such as N32 or a sulfate-resisting cement on salty ground. Paths are typically 75 to 100mm thick, car driveways around 100mm and heavier driveways 125mm or more, while house slabs follow the engineer's design. Steel mesh such as SL72 or SL82 is set on bar chairs so it sits within the slab, and AS 3600 sets the cover between the steel and the ground. Control joints are cut every few metres so the shrinkage every slab goes through shows as a neat line rather than a random crack.

Not every tired slab needs replacing. Concrete repairs route and seal cracks, rebuild spalled patches with repair mortar, grind trip edges and re-pour sunken sections. Concrete resurfacing bonds a new spray-on, stencilled or trowelled overlay over a sound slab. Concrete sealing protects new and old concrete from oil, UV and salt, and in full Mildura sun most decorative surfaces are resealed every two to three years.

Work covers the Victorian side, including Irymple, Red Cliffs, Merbein, Merbein South, Birdwoodton, Koorlong, Cardross, Nichols Point and Mildura South, and the New South Wales side across the George Chaffey Bridge, including Buronga, Gol Gol, Dareton, Coomealla, Curlwaa and Wentworth. Two councils are involved, Mildura Rural City Council and Wentworth Shire Council, and approvals differ between the states.

Colour built through or into the slab for driveways, paths and patios. We dose, place and cure it carefully so Mildura's dry heat does not leave the colour patchy. Fixed on-site quotes.

Concreting in Mildura is priced per square metre for slabs, driveways and paths, per lineal metre for kerbs and per square metre of face for retaining walls. The finish, the ground and the site all move the figure, which is why every job is priced after a free on-site measure and confirmed as a fixed written quote.
Plain broomed concrete is the most economical finish. Coloured concrete and exposed aggregate sit in the middle and are broadly comparable with each other. Stamped concrete costs more again because of the colour hardener, release agent and stamping labour, and honed and polished finishes add grinding stages on top of the slab. Sealing adds a little to any decorative finish and protects it for years.
Breaking out and removing an old slab adds demolition and disposal. Damp or salty irrigation ground adds a heavier membrane and an upgraded mix. Soft sand or fill adds excavation and crushed rock. Tight access may need a concrete pump, and thicker slabs and heavier mesh for trucks or machinery raise the rate. Large areas spread setup costs, so the rate per square metre usually falls as the job grows.

Most concrete failures around Mildura trace back to the ground under the slab and the heat on the day it was poured. Each problem has a cause, and each cause is dealt with at the build.
Much of the district sits on deep, sandy, lime-rich Mallee soil. It drains well, but loose sand settles and washes out from under a slab if it is not compacted, which leaves sunken edges and cracks. Every slab sits on a crushed rock base compacted in layers, and leaking downpipes and sprinklers are kept away from slab edges.
Mildura gets only about 270 to 290mm of rain a year and summer days often top 40C. On those days fresh concrete can dry faster than bleed water rises, which causes plastic shrinkage cracks and a weak, dusty surface. Summer pours start early in the morning, an evaporation retarder is used during finishing, and slabs are wet-cured or sealed with a curing compound for at least three to seven days.
The Sunraysia irrigation districts have a long history of shallow water tables and salt, serious enough that salt-interception schemes were built to protect the Murray. Salt rising through a slab attacks the cement and rusts the steel, causing scaling and concrete cancer. Slabs on these blocks sit on a continuous damp-proof membrane with an upgraded mix and the steel cover AS 3600 requires.
Many homes in Merbein, Red Cliffs, Irymple and the surrounding settlements carry concrete laid decades ago, often thin, without a membrane and without mesh. Tree roots lift paths and driveways, and old slabs crack, sink and spall. Sound slabs are repaired or resurfaced; broken ones are replaced on a proper base.

Peak Concreting Mildura is a local concrete contractor working both sides of the Murray. The business builds for the conditions that break concrete here, sand, salt and heat, and it prices every job honestly after looking at the site.
Every job starts with a free on-site measure. The ground, levels, access and any old concrete are checked, salt and damp are looked for before pricing rather than found halfway through, and the quote lists the excavation, base, membrane, reinforcement, concrete grade and finish, so owners can compare like with like.
Once a quote is accepted, a pour date is booked, with summer pours set for the early morning. Where a slab needs a soil test, engineering, a building permit or a council crossover permit, those are coordinated so there is one point of contact. Old concrete is removed and taken away, and the site is left clean. Call 0485 032 128 to book a measure.
ABOUT

Concreters Mildura owners call on Peak Concreting Mildura for everything from a garden path to a machinery shed slab. The business works across Mildura and Sunraysia on both sides of the Murray, from Red Cliffs and Merbein to Buronga, Gol Gol and Wentworth, and builds every slab for the ground it sits on: compacted bases for Mallee sand, membranes and upgraded mixes for salty irrigation blocks, and early pours with proper curing for the heat. Every job is quoted in writing after a free on-site measure. The about page explains how jobs are run.

THE PROCESS

Call 0485 032 128 to book a free on-site visit. The site is measured, the ground, levels and access are checked, and the finish that suits the budget and the property is talked through. A fixed, itemised written quote follows for the agreed scope, with any variation confirmed in writing before work starts. No pressure and no obligation.

The site is prepared for the ground it sits on: excavated, compacted and formed, with steel reinforcement and control joints set to suit stable Mallee sand, reactive clay pockets or low, damp irrigation-block ground. The concrete is then poured, screeded and finished in the chosen finish, with summer pours timed for the cooler early hours and screened from wind so the surface does not dry out too fast.

Curing is where Mildura jobs are won or lost, so fresh concrete is kept damp or sealed with a curing compound for several days before it carries any real load, which builds long-term strength and helps limit surface cracking. Formwork is stripped, the site is left tidy and clean, and the owner is shown when the surface is ready to use and how to look after it. Decorative finishes are sealed to help them resist UV fade and hold their colour.

Concreting in Mildura and Sunraysia
Straight answers on price, timing, ground and approvals
It depends on the area, the finish, the ground and the access. Plain broomed concrete is the most economical, coloured and exposed aggregate sit in the middle, and stamped, honed and polished finishes cost more. Removing old concrete and building on salty ground add to the price. Every job is priced as a fixed written quote after a free on-site measure.
Concrete driveways, house and shed slabs, footings, paths, kerbs, retaining walls, exposed aggregate, coloured, stamped, honed and polished finishes, plus repairs, resurfacing and sealing. Residential and light commercial work are both covered.
Mildura and the Victorian towns around it, including Irymple, Red Cliffs, Merbein, Merbein South, Birdwoodton, Koorlong, Cardross, Nichols Point and Mildura South, and the New South Wales towns across the river, including Buronga, Gol Gol, Dareton, Coomealla, Curlwaa and Wentworth.
All concrete shrinks as it cures, so control joints are cut to make any cracking run straight and neat. The cracks that cause problems come from fast drying, poor bases and missing mesh, so summer pours start early, the surface is protected from evaporation and the slab is wet-cured for several days.
It can be on older irrigation blocks with shallow water tables. Salt rising through a slab attacks the cement and rusts the steel. A continuous damp-proof membrane, an upgraded mix such as N32 or a sulfate-resisting cement, and good steel cover protect the slab.
Concrete within the property usually does not, but the crossover between the boundary and the road sits on council land and usually needs a permit from Mildura Rural City Council or Wentworth Shire Council. It is checked before work starts.
A car driveway is commonly 100mm of reinforced concrete on a compacted crushed rock base, increased to 125mm or more for caravans, trucks or machinery. The crossover follows the council's specified thickness.
Exposed aggregate washes the surface back to reveal rounded stones for grip. Stamped concrete presses a pattern into a coloured surface. Honed concrete is ground back after curing to a smooth matte finish showing the stone in cross-section.
Most residential driveways and slabs are formed, poured and finished within one to three days on site, depending on size and access. Cars typically wait about seven days before driving on a new driveway.
Often, yes. Cracks can be routed and sealed, spalling patched, trip edges ground level and sound slabs resurfaced or sealed. Slabs that have broken up or fall toward the house are better replaced.
Yes. The business carries public liability insurance, and structural work follows the relevant Australian Standards, including AS 2870 for residential slabs and AS 3600 for concrete cover.
Concrete can be poured all year. Summer pours start early in the morning and are cured carefully, while autumn and spring give a longer working window. Many owners book decorative and outdoor work in the cooler months so it is ready for summer.
