No slab is guaranteed crack-free, but good practice makes a big difference here. Because Mildura's heat, low humidity and wind pull moisture out of fresh concrete quickly, we pour early in the day, use an evaporative retarder, shield the slab from wind and cure it for several days. We also cut control joints, which do not stop shrinkage but steer any cracking to neat, planned lines rather than random ones. Done this way, a driveway handles local summers well.

For a standard domestic driveway carrying cars, around 100mm over a well-compacted base with steel mesh is typical. If you regularly park a caravan, boat trailer, truck or farm machinery, we increase the thickness and adjust the reinforcement to suit the loads. On soft, sandy or filled Mallee ground we may also add base preparation so the slab is properly supported. We work the right build out with you on site before quoting.

It can, particularly on lower or irrigated ground in districts like Merbein, Red Cliffs and the older First Mildura blocks where the water table tends to be shallow and salts are present. Salty, damp ground can attack concrete and any steel within it over time. Where that risk applies we can specify a higher-grade mix, a continuous damp-proof membrane under the slab and adequate cover to the reinforcement. We assess this per site rather than assuming it applies everywhere.

As a general guide you can usually walk on it after a day or two, but we ask you to keep vehicles off for around seven days so the concrete gains enough strength, and longer before heavy vehicles. In hot weather the surface can look ready well before it actually is, which is one reason curing matters so much locally. We give you clear timeframes for your specific pour and finish before we leave the site.

Yes, we can break out and remove an existing driveway, path or slab and cart the material away. Because removal, disposal and any resulting base repairs add to the work, we always itemise it separately in your quote so you can see the cost clearly. If access for machinery is tight, we will talk that through on site, as it can affect both the method and the price. Everything is agreed before we start.

Decorative finishes such as exposed aggregate, colour or stencil are best decided before the pour, because they are formed as the concrete is placed rather than added on afterwards. If you already have a plain driveway and want to change its look, resurfacing or a decorative overlay may be an option depending on the slab's condition.
