Honed Concrete In Mildura

Both are grinding processes, but they stop at different points. Honed concrete is refined to a smooth matte with a soft, natural sheen, while polished concrete is taken further to a high, reflective gloss. For outdoor areas in Mildura we almost always recommend honed, because a matte surface is less slippery when wet, hides marks and scuffs better, and does not throw harsh glare in our strong sun. Polished is really an indoor floor finish. Honed gives you the clean, modern look outside without the drawbacks of a mirror shine.

A honed finish is smoother than exposed aggregate, so for pool surrounds and wet areas we leave a slightly finer texture or add a grip treatment to keep it safe underfoot when wet. All hard surfaces warm up in our summer, but colour makes a big difference, and lighter honed finishes stay noticeably cooler underfoot than dark concrete or dark pavers. Sometimes, but not always. Honing needs a slab that is sound, thick enough and made with suitable aggregate, and a lot of older plain slabs do not have decorative stone in the mix to reveal, so grinding them just gives a plain ground surface. We assess the existing concrete first and tell you honestly what a hone would produce. If your slab is not a good candidate, a resurfacing overlay can give you a decorative finish instead. Either way we set realistic expectations before any work starts.

Because the finish is ground into the slab rather than coated on, there is nothing to peel or flake, so a honed surface is very durable and lasts for many years with basic care. Keeping it sealed protects it from staining and wear, and in Mildura's sun that sealer works hard, so resealing every few years keeps it looking its best.
