Peak Concreting Mildura was built around one idea: out here, concrete is only as good as the way it is cured. Mildura sits in hot, arid Mallee country, with summer highs in the mid-30s, 40C-plus days most years and some of the lowest rainfall in populated Victoria. That heat, low humidity and dry wind pull moisture out of fresh concrete quickly, and rapid surface drying is where plastic-shrinkage cracking begins, so pouring early, slowing evaporation and curing properly matter more here than almost anywhere else in the state. The ground adds its own demands. The district's deep sandy and calcareous soils are often stable, but reactive texture-contrast subsoils and clay pockets turn up too, and the century-old irrigation districts around Merbein, Red Cliffs and the First Mildura blocks tend to carry shallow water tables and salinity that can attack concrete and steel over time. Owner Steve Smith has spent more than 12 years pouring across all of it, from Birdwoodton and Irymple through the growth corridor at Mildura South to Buronga and Gol Gol on the NSW bank. The business is set up to prepare each site for what it actually is, get the base and reinforcement right, cut the joints where they belong, cure the slab for the conditions, and quote it fixed on site.
