As a general rule, low retaining walls can often be built without a permit, but once a wall reaches around one metre high, or where it affects a neighbour, a drain or a boundary, approval and an engineer's design are usually required. Water is the number one killer of retaining walls. We install an ag-drain in aggregate behind the wall and weep holes through the face so water escapes instead of building up. We build walls of most practical heights, but height changes the rules. Up to about one metre a wall can often be built to standard good practice, while anything taller must be built to an engineer's design with the footing, steel and drainage they specify, plus council approval. Taller walls need proportionally bigger footings and more reinforcement, so the cost climbs with height. We will tell you on site what your slope needs and when an engineer has to be involved.

It depends on the height, the load and the look you want. Concrete sleeper walls are economical and tidy for low garden terraces, core-filled block suits medium heights and a rendered finish, and poured reinforced walls are best for taller or heavily loaded walls. A short, low garden wall might take a couple of days, while a taller engineered wall with extensive footings, drainage and backfill can take a week or more.
