concreting in Curlwaa

Concrete driveways, slabs and decorative finishes built for Mildura's hot, arid climate and Mallee ground. Fully insured, with fixed itemised on-site quotes.

Curlwaa sits on the New South Wales side of the Murray, about 7km east of Wentworth, and it holds the distinction of being the district's first irrigation settlement, worked since the late 1880s. Peak Concreting Mildura crosses the George Chaffey bridge to pour driveways, house slabs, shed floors and farm hardstands for the horticultural blocks and rural-residential homes here. This is river-flat country: sandy soils, low-lying ground and a shallow water table that call for damp-proofing and careful base preparation rather than a one-size mix. The bigger challenge is the climate. Curlwaa shares Sunraysia's hot, dry summers, where a slab poured on a 40C afternoon can start losing surface water faster than it bleeds, so we plan pours around the heat and cure them properly. OUR STORY

Concreting for Curlwaa's oldest irrigation blocks

Curlwaa was the first place in the district to be irrigated, back in the late 1880s, and much of it is still small horticultural holdings and rural-residential blocks along the river flats. That mix means we get called for a wide range of work: new house slabs on vacant lots, replacement driveways where decades-old concrete has broken up, shed and machinery floors for growers, and hardstands for farm vehicles. Steve Smith has spent more than twelve years laying concrete across Mildura and the wider Sunraysia region, so a short trip over the bridge into New South Wales is routine for us. Because Curlwaa is spread out, we plan each job around access for the truck and the pump, and we confirm the scope on site before a price is set. Whether it is a single path or a full farm hardstand, the same standards apply. We give you a fixed, itemised quote so you know exactly what the pour covers.

What Curlwaa's river-flat ground does to concrete

Curlwaa's blocks sit on low, sandy river-flat soils close to the Murray, and that setting typically brings a shallow water table into play. Damp ground can push moisture up into a slab and, on the irrigation flats, carry salts that attack the cement paste and corrode the steel over time. Where the water table is close to the surface we lay a continuous damp-proof membrane under the slab, keep proper cover to the reinforcement, and can step up to a higher-grade, more durable mix suited to the exposure when the ground calls for it. Loose or sandy ground also needs to be well compacted and, where fill has been placed, checked before we pour, because uncontrolled fill can settle. Soil behaviour varies from block to block, so for a house slab we recommend a site classification and soil test rather than assuming what is underfoot. We then build slabs and footings to the engineer's details and to AS 2870, so the ground conditions drive the design rather than guesswork.

Why choose us in Curlwaa

Why Curlwaa locals choose Peak Concreting Mildura

Locals here want a concreter who understands both the heat and the water, and who turns up when they say they will. Peak Concreting Mildura brings more than twelve years of local experience, fixed and itemised on-site quotes, and full insurance with 20 million dollars of public liability cover. We build residential slabs and footings to AS 2870, work to for the concrete itself, and follow AS 4678 where a job involves retaining walls. Just as important in Curlwaa, we take curing seriously: pouring early on hot days, using an evaporative retarder before finishing, and wet-curing or applying a curing compound so the slab gains strength instead of drying out. We quote for the scope in front of us and agree any variations in writing before we act on them. You deal with Steve directly from the first quote to the final finish.

Whether your block fronts the river or sits back on higher ground, we bring the same base preparation, curing discipline and finishing to each pour. If you are not sure whether we reach your address, a quick call will confirm it. We are happy to look at anything from a garden path to a full shed slab.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Everything you need to know about our concreting In Curlwaa

Do you pour concrete in Curlwaa even though it is in New South Wales?

Yes. Curlwaa is only a short drive from Mildura across the George Chaffey bridge, and we work both sides of the Murray as a matter of course. Being on the New South Wales side does not change our pricing approach: we still give you a fixed, itemised, on-site quote. The trip over the bridge is factored into that quote, so there are no surprises.

How do you stop a Curlwaa slab cracking in the summer heat?

We cannot promise a slab will never crack, but we control where and how it cracks with good practice. On hot Sunraysia days we pour early in the morning, use an evaporative retarder to slow surface moisture loss, and set up windbreaks where the site is exposed. Once finished, we wet-cure the slab or apply a curing compound and keep it curing for several days. We also cut control joints at planned spacings so any shrinkage movement is guided to the joints rather than showing across the face.

The ground near the river feels damp. Does that affect the concrete?

It can, and it is worth taking seriously on Curlwaa's river-flat blocks. A shallow water table lets moisture and dissolved salts move up towards a slab, which over time can attack the cement and corrode the steel inside it. To manage this we lay a continuous damp-proof membrane under the slab, keep adequate cover to the reinforcement, and can specify a higher-grade, more durable mix suited to the exposure where the ground is salty or damp. A soil test tells us how far to take those measures on your particular block.

Do I need a soil test before you pour a house slab?

For a house slab we recommend one. Soil across Curlwaa varies from stable sand to reactive clay pockets, and only a site classification under AS 2870 tells us which you have. We then build the slab and footings to the classification and the engineer's details, so the design matches the ground rather than a general assumption. For a simple path or small shed floor a full test is not usually needed, and we will tell you honestly which applies.

What kinds of concreting do you do around Curlwaa?

We handle the full range for rural-residential and horticultural blocks: house slabs, driveways, paths, patios, shed and machinery floors, and farm hardstands. Because many Curlwaa blocks are working holdings, heavy-duty slabs for sheds and vehicle access are common requests. We prepare and thicken the base to suit the loads a slab will carry. Tell us what the area will be used for and we will scope it properly.

How do you quote a job in Curlwaa?

We come to your block, measure up, check access for the truck and pump, and look at the ground conditions before we price anything. You then get a fixed, itemised quote that sets out exactly what the pour includes. Any per-square-metre guide we mention is for new work with standard access and base preparation; removal of old concrete, difficult access, extra thickness or salinity detailing can change it. If the scope changes once we start, we agree the variation with you in writing first.
