Any concrete can crack, and Mildura's hot, dry summers make thin kerb sections especially prone to surface crazing if they are poured and finished carelessly. The main defence is curing discipline: we pour in the cooler part of the day, keep the fresh concrete damp or sealed with a curing compound and protect it from drying wind. Control joints and steel in driveway kerbs then manage where any movement shows. We cannot promise concrete will never crack, but proper base prep and curing make a sound, long-lasting edge far more likely.

Garden edging is a low border that separates lawn, mulch and gravel and keeps beds looking tidy. A mower strip is a flush concrete margin set at ground level so you can run a mower wheel along it and avoid line-trimming the edge every week. Both are formed on a compacted base and cured properly, but the mower strip is usually a touch wider and set flush, while edging can stand a little proud. Long, straight runs on open ground are well suited to extruded or machine-formed kerbing, which is quicker and more economical per metre. On the sandy, calcareous Mallee soils common out there, we pay attention to compacting the base so the kerb does not settle in loose ground. It depends on the job. Light garden edging and mower strips generally do not need steel, but driveway kerbs that carry vehicle wheels and knocks are formed thicker and reinforced so they resist cracking at the edge. Getting the base compacted correctly matters just as much as the steel, because a kerb that sits on loose or uncompacted ground will move regardless. We will tell you honestly on site whether your kerb needs reinforcement or not.

It can. Parts of the Sunraysia irrigation districts around Red Cliffs, Merbein and Irymple have shallow water tables and salinity that can attack concrete and any steel in it over time. For edging in those areas we can specify a higher-grade mix and keep steel well covered, and we make sure water drains away from the concrete rather than sitting against it. A site test is the only way to confirm how salty or damp a particular block is, so we treat it case by case. For most garden edging away from wet ground, standard detailing is fine.

You can usually walk near it and remove forms within a day or so, but the concrete keeps gaining strength for weeks. We ask you to keep vehicles off a new driveway kerb for several days, and longer in cooler weather. In Mildura's summer heat we keep the kerb cured and damp for the first several days rather than letting it dry out fast, because slow curing builds a harder, more durable surface.
